In a bold move, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has announced that it will invest a staggering $4.5 billion in five plants in Michigan for one purpose: to engineer all-new Jeep SUV models. An article from Reuters states that FCA wants to compete in the extremely lucrative market of full-size three-row SUV models that has long been “dominated by rivals General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co.” The article also states that these five plants are projected to create an amazing 6,500 jobs in the state of Michigan. Three of the new plants are expected to produce both hybrid and fully-electric Jeep models, something that could change the entire game for the SUV market. The expert team at Millsboro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, your local Jeep dealer in Delaware, is very excited by this news because it means FCA will be adding its renowned elegance and master craftsmanship to the rugged performance of the Jeep brand.
According to Reuters, FCA Chief Executive Officer Mike Manley said that the company’s investments are focused on SUV models, an area he said is “forecasted to continue to grow.” He also said FCA is particularly interested in engineering their own three-row SV models, which he said is “a segment that I’ve been very interested in for some time.” FCA also announced that it will be turning a Detroit-based engine plant into an assembly plant. It plans to start construction on this $1.6 billion facility later this year, start production of an all-new three-row SUV model by the end of 2020, and follow that with a revamped version of the popular Grand Cherokee in early 2021. Another Detroit-based plant will receive a $900 million investment, becoming modernized and ready to engineer the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
